Newborn Essentials: What You Actually Need for Your Baby

Becoming a parent should feel exciting but somewhere between the endless TikTok recommendations, “must-have” product lists and conflicting advice, it can quickly start to feel overwhelming.

When I was pregnant with my first baby, I remember thinking I needed absolutely everything. Every newborn essentials list online seemed longer than the last, and instead of feeling prepared, I just felt more anxious about getting it wrong.

Now, after three children, one thing I know for certain is this:

There is no one-size-fits-all newborn essentials list.

What works brilliantly for one family may be completely unnecessary for another, which is exactly why so many expectant parents end up overwhelmed, overspending, and surrounded by products they barely use.

The truth is, building your newborn essentials checklist should start with your lifestyle — not social media trends.

Why Generic Newborn Essentials Lists Don’t Work:

Most baby essentials guides are written as giant checklists of products you “need” before your baby arrives.

But every family is different.

Your home, your routine, your budget, your lifestyle and even where you live all influence what will genuinely make life easier once your baby arrives.

For example:

  • A parent living in London who walks everywhere may prioritise a lightweight travel-friendly pram.

  • A family with limited storage space may make very different choices to someone with a large house.

  • Some parents want minimalist essentials, while others value convenience and flexibility.

There’s no right or wrong — but there is a huge difference between buying intentionally and buying reactively.

The Categories That Actually Matter:

Rather than focusing on buying every trending product, I always encourage expectant parents to think about the key areas of everyday life with a newborn.

The goal isn’t to buy everything at once — it’s to create a setup that feels safe, practical and supportive for your lifestyle.

Sleep Essentials

Sleep is one of the areas where new parents often feel the most pressure, particularly with social media showing beautifully styled nurseries and endless sleep products.

But instead of trying to create the perfect nursery before your baby arrives, focus on creating a safe and practical sleep setup first.

Current safe sleep guidance from organisations like The Lullaby Trust recommends that babies sleep in the same room as their parents for at least the first six months, which means many parents may not use a fully finished nursery immediately anyway.

When thinking about newborn sleep essentials, prioritise:

  • a safe sleep space

  • a firm, flat mattress

  • fitted sheets

  • appropriate room temperature

  • simple, breathable sleepwear

Travel Essentials

When building your newborn essentials list, travel products are often where parents feel the most overwhelmed — especially when it comes to choosing a pram.

The “best” pram or travel system depends entirely on your lifestyle and day-to-day routine.

For example:

  • Do you live in a city and walk everywhere?

  • Do you regularly use public transport?

  • Do you need something lightweight for stairs or small car boots?

  • Will you travel frequently with your baby?

These practical considerations matter far more than choosing the most popular pram online.

Car seats are one of the most important newborn essentials to research carefully.

It’s important to think about:

  • compatibility with your car

  • ease of installation

  • whether you want a rotating base

  • weight and portability

  • how often you’ll realistically use it outside the car

This is often an area where personalised advice can make a huge difference.

Feeding Essentials

Many expectant parents plan to breastfeed, but in reality feeding journeys can sometimes look very different to what we imagined during pregnancy.

For that reason, I always suggest being prepared for both breastfeeding and bottle feeding, even if your hope is to exclusively breastfeed.

Having a few bottles and some formula available can help reduce stress if feeding becomes more challenging than expected in those early days.

One thing I wouldn’t recommend is rushing to buy every feeding gadget before your baby arrives. In many cases, breast pumps and additional feeding equipment can wait until afterwards once you know what works best for you and your baby.

Clothing Essentials

One of the biggest mistakes many parents make when shopping for newborn clothes is focusing too much on outfits rather than practicality.

Newborns go through a surprising number of clothing changes each day, so simplicity really is key.

Soft sleepsuits, zip-up babygrows and comfortable layers tend to make everyday life much easier in those early weeks, particularly during frequent nappy changes and overnight wake-ups.

It’s also worth remembering that you’ll likely be doing far more washing than expected with a newborn, so having enough practical everyday basics is often more useful than buying lots of occasion outfits in tiny sizes.

Changing Essentials

Changing essentials are one of the most practical parts of preparing for a newborn.

Most parents simply need a setup that feels easy and functional for everyday life.

Some of the key things to think about include:

  • nappies

  • wipes

  • changing mats

  • nappy disposal

  • storage and organisation

You may also want to consider whether disposable nappies or reusable nappies are the best fit for your lifestyle, as well as whether you’d prefer reusable cloth wipes or water-based disposable wipes.

The most important thing is creating a changing setup that feels manageable and realistic for those early newborn weeks.

The Biggest Mistake Parents Make

After speaking to so many expectant parents, I think the biggest mistake is feeling pressure to buy everything before they’ve even met their baby.

You do not need to have every product figured out immediately.

Some things you’ll use constantly. Some things you’ll never touch.

And that’s completely normal.

The goal isn’t to buy more — it’s to buy smarter.

What I’ve Learned After Three Babies

If there’s one thing motherhood has taught me, it’s that confidence matters more than perfection.

You don’t need the perfect nursery, the trendiest products or the longest newborn checklist to be a wonderful parent.

What matters most is creating a setup that feels calm, practical and supportive for your family.
