Ski Holidays with Kids: Top Tips for a Stress-Free Family Ski Trip
Skiing may have been a yearly tradition before children, but heading to the slopes with little ones can feel overwhelming. Between travel logistics, childcare, equipment, lessons and cost, a family ski holiday often requires more planning than you might expect. The good news? With the right preparation, skiing with kids can be genuinely magical.
Here are my top tips to help make your family ski holiday smoother, calmer and actually enjoyable for everyone.
1. Childcare Is Key
If both parents want to ski, reliable childcare is essential. Ski schools typically offer lessons lasting two to three hours, so if you’d like longer days on the slopes, it’s worth looking for resorts with crèches or kids’ clubs.
Many French ski schools include lunch and crèche services after lessons, which can be incredibly helpful. For younger children or longer childcare hours, all-inclusive options such as Club Med offer on-site crèches, ski lessons, kids’ clubs and evening entertainment. When you’re travelling with children, convenience really does matter.
2. Travel Wisely: Flying Isn’t Always the Fastest or Cheapest
Flying may seem like the obvious option, but it’s not always the most practical when skiing with kids. Ski resorts are often high in the mountains, meaning long airport transfers that can easily stretch to three hours or more.
For French resorts, consider driving, taking a shuttle, or my personal favourite—the Eurostar. Spending a night in Paris before catching the train to Bourg-St-Maurice can turn travel into part of the adventure. From there, resorts like Val d’Isère, Tignes and La Rosière are around 30 minutes away, while Les Arcs is reached via a funicular straight up the mountain. Less time in transit almost always means happier children.
3. Consider All-Inclusive Packages
Booking flights, transfers, lift passes, equipment hire, ski school and meals separately can quickly add up. While all-inclusive resorts may seem more expensive upfront, once everything is added together they often represent far better value—and far less mental load.
Having meals, childcare, ski lessons and entertainment organised in advance removes many of the stress points that come with skiing as a family.
4. Timing Matters
Early and late season skiing can work brilliantly for families. March and early April often bring milder weather, quieter slopes and more budget-friendly options.
If you’re tied to school holidays, Easter can be a calmer alternative to February half-term, which is typically the busiest and most expensive time to ski.
5. Pick Accommodation with Great Facilities
With young children, you’re unlikely to be skiing from first lift to last run. Look for accommodation with family-friendly facilities such as swimming pools, playrooms or on-site activities like ice skating, bowling or cinemas.
It’s also worth considering whether self-catering truly works for your family, or whether half-board or all-inclusive would make life easier. Some hotels offer early children’s dinners—an absolute lifesaver when little ones can’t make it to a 7:30pm sitting.
6. Choose Your Resort Carefully
Resort choice can make or break a family ski trip. Look for beginner-friendly slopes, gentle gradients and easy access to ski schools. Resorts where nursery slopes are located in the village are particularly helpful, saving you from carrying equipment across lifts or relying on buses.
Non-ski activities matter too. Even enthusiastic young skiers need downtime, so look for resorts offering sledging, ice skating, horse-drawn sleigh rides or indoor play areas.
7. Leave Ski Lessons to the Pros
Unless you’re feeling exceptionally brave, it’s best to leave ski lessons to professional instructors. Children often respond far better to someone who isn’t their parent, and ski instructors are experts at turning learning into fun through games, characters and confidence-building techniques.
Private lessons can be ideal for younger children, as they move entirely at your child’s pace, allow for breaks and often offer flexible drop-off options. Group ski schools can be wonderful for confidence and motivation, especially for slightly older children who enjoy learning alongside others.
Whichever option you choose, book early—especially during school holidays, when lessons can sell out months in advance.
